Friendship is...
There are no frontiers for friendship.
Friendship is not invented. It is for all the children of the world.

With more friends, sky is brighter.

Friendship is a song of all the children of the world.

Without friend you don't go to school,
Without friend you don't go for trip,
Without friend you don't dance,
Without friend you don't go away.

Who wants to be a friend must look for another.
Friend is a friend only to the friend:
a boy to boy,
a girl to girl,
a girl to boy,
a boy to girl.

Who has a friend he has everything:
a helping hand in need,
an address for a letter,
a guitar for song,
another ten fingers to his ten,
an ear for secret,
an extra pair of eyes,
and a mind to think.

Look for friends throughout the world:
look for friends by the road, by the path,
under each hill, on every mountain,
in every field, in the meadow...

In each white house there lives a friend.
He knows to welcome his guests.
Write to him.
Send him a book,
ask him how is he going on,
hit the ball,
give a record.

When you go away
you should write your friend.
Letters are words from far-off.
Letters are telephones to friends.

Message from the Secretary General of UN to the European Children's Gathering "Joy of Europe" (1970)
It gives me great pleasure to send this message of greetings to the European Children's Gathering "Joy of Europe" organized in Belgrade on the occasion of World Child Day. The basic purposes and objectives of this manifestation are commendable indeed. European children, by expressing solidarity with the children of the world and promoting international understanding and friendship through the universal cultural media of song and dance, are setting a laudable example and making a major contribution in support of the principles and purposes of the United Nations.
It is specially noteworthy that these children from advanced and affluent nations will have opportunity to manifest their concern for the plight of the less fortunate of their friends in the developing regions of the world. The children today, who are the leaders of tomorrow, will thus be able to acquire a solid sense of international awareness and universal consciousness which augurs well for the future of international peace and progress.

U Tant
Secretary General of the United Nations, 1970.
